The Ark

Woodford Folk Festival, 2001

The Ark, a 13 metre lantern vessel carried by 200 people, was laden with images of Australia’s native fauna. It also bore two children: one Aboriginal Australian, and one whose father was born in Australia of British parentage and whose mother was born in Holland.

Participants made symbols of the things they value most to be taken onto the Ark. The white dove figurehead flew down from the prow to receive words of wisdom from the elders, represented by Folk Federation president and well- known defender of the natural environment, Des Ritchie. These words were projected onto the hull of the Ark for all to see: “We are the ancestors of tomorrow”.
